Foster-to-Adopt

Before You Apply

Our foster to adopt process takes time because we want every bird to find the right home. It usually takes at least 40 volunteer hours from the time you apply. This depends on the bird, your location, and our volunteers. We look for families who can meet the care standards needed to help parrots thrive.

Our Approach

Every parrot has a unique personality and story. Our coordinators work with you to find a bird that fits your home and lifestyle. We ask you to stay open to meeting the bird who truly connects with you. Our goal is to help each parrot find a safe, loving, and lasting home.

Where We Serve

KiKi’s Legacy Parrot Foundation currently serves North Carolina locations within 1.5 hours drive from Hickory and in Raleigh-Durham. If you live outside these areas, we encourage you to look for a rescue closer to home.

Foster-to-Adopt Steps
1. Apply
Submit our Foster-to-Adopt Application. After we review it, we will schedule a time to come to your home and do an informational interview.
2. Home Visits
A volunteer will meet with you in person to talk about your space, schedule, and what kind of parrot may fit best. This is friendly and relaxed. Prior to foster, the parrot will do several home visits to ensure a successful transition.
3. Visit KiKi's Legacy Parrot Foundation
You will come to meet the parrots and ask any questions you may have.
4. Volunteer
We will teach you everything you need to know about caring for a parrot through a mandatory 40+ hours of volunteering at KiKi’s Legacy Parrot Foundation. This is to help prepare you to provide the appropriate diet, housing, stimulation, medical support, etc. for one of our parrots. It also helps you build a bond with the parrots and see which parrot connects with you. It’s a magical moment when a parrot chooses you.
5. Foster Period
Most families begin with a 3+ month foster period after signing the foster agreement. This helps everyone learn whether the match feels right. If it does not work out, the bird returns to us so we can continue supporting them. And, we will work to match you with another parrot. KiKi’s Legacy Parrot Foundation has a wealth of knowledge that you can draw upon throughout the foster program and beyond.
6. Adoption
If the foster period goes well, we will finalize the adoption, and sign the agreement contract. You now have a new family member. When the bird ever needs another home in the future, you must return the parrot to KiKi’s Legacy Parrot Foundation. We maintain 51% ownership of the bird.
